Most of my paintings are of scenes from the Yorkshire Dales, that I know well from walking and that I love for their unspoiled beauty and peace. Wonderful views are available at almost every turn and it is my aim to capture something of the enjoyment I feel when standing on a hillside, by a river or walking along a lane.
The composition of my paintings is usually straightforward; the landscape of fields, cloud-dappled hillsides, barns and drystone walls frequently provide a lead-in to the picture.
I deliberately use a restricted palette which helps the unity of the painting and the presentation of the subtle tones of the scenes. I aim to create the illusion of detail rather than present it exactly thereby keeping a liveliness in the work.
Whatever the techniques, I simply hope you feel as if you could be there!
I also enjoy painting people. I usually try to have two or three people in the painting as the fun is to capture something of the relationship I think exists between them. These can be found in ‘People & Portraits’
When pictures have more of a focus on the time of year or place I have dropped them into the sections ‘Seasonal’ and ‘Towns & Villages’.
I’m pleased to say that I have sold many versions of my paintings and now have them in every continent except Antartica – so if anyone is going that way, please get in touch!
