5 Week Course:
Saturdays 18th September – 16th October 2021
You will be guided step-by-step through the process and will develop your confidence as an independent screen printer. You will learn how to register and layer your designs, and print with multiple colours. You will gain an understanding of the photo stencil emulsion technique and will learn how to coat and expose screens. Your tutor will also introduce you to relevant contextual artists and screen printing terminology.
What experience do I need?
No previous experience is necessary. The course is for beginners, or anyone looking to refresh their skills. Those with previous experience may use the course to develop their skills and become familiar with the facilities at our workshop.
What will I make?
You will produce a series of multi layer screen prints of up to A3 size. There is the option to create graphic or fine art prints as well as greetings cards. Your tutor can show you lots of examples of screen prints at your first session to help you understand the different possibilities.
Who is my tutor?
Joanna Wilkinson is a practising printmaker, illustrator and bookbinder. She uses printing, collage, analogue/slow photography and sometimes even old style colouring techniques like felt tips in her work! Joanna has recently completed an MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University and is also a Co-operative Member of Leeds Print Workshop. She has been working with us over the last three years as a technician and tutor. She has experience in teaching a wide variety of different groups of people including children and adults.

Do I need to bring anything?
All materials are provided; this will include cartridge paper, a range of ink colours, photo sensitive emulsion and all the equipment needed to make screen prints. The workshop also sells a range of printmaking papers should you wish to try something different. Prices range from £1 – £3.20 per sheet. There is also the opportunity to purchase additional screen exposures should you wish to produce more than two designs. One A3 screen coating costs £3. It will be useful to bring a portfolio folder along to carry your prints home, we also sell small portfolio folders.
Our workshops and courses look a little bit different as we ensure safe procedures are in place in light of Coronavirus. The changes we have made include;
- Requesting that students attend the workshop with a mask or face covering
- Hand sanitiser provided on entry
- Shared aprons will not be provided so please bring your own apron or wear old clothes to the workshop
- Fewer participants on courses, or using a larger space in the building where possible for some courses
If I can’t attend can I get a refund?
We will refund you if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after this time no refunds will be issued. Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non refundable. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website here.
What if the course is cancelled?
We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings or if lockdown measures are put back in place). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one dedicated disabled car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
