Title: Velley of the Nuns, Madeira
This is a digital painting from my own photograph. The Valley of the Nuns is hidden away in the steep Madeiran mountains. In 1566 the nuns from the Santa Clara convent in the capital Funchal fled from pirates attacking Funchal and found seclusion here. Until relatively recently, the village could only be accessed with considerable difficulty due to the cliffs and peaks surrounding it. A tunnel southwards in the direction of Funchal now offers safe access to the valley.
