Jessica McMillan : Contemporary Art and Embroidery
I believe it is an Artists job to notice things, things others may over look whether it is observational, social or cultural. Our job as Artists is to take that noticed ‘thing’, engulf and interpret it and re-present it in a way that hopefully shines new light or a different perspective onto a once overlooked aspect of life. The act of noticing is a key part of my work.
My practice centres around the theme of ‘Noticing the Unnoticed’ in any form this may take. Through a rather methodical approach I often deconstruct elements of a subject through my work to find the true essence of that specific subject matter. My work always has this underlying theme but takes on many forms in its development, I don’t like to call myself a painter, draftswoman, printer or embroiderer as I feel it adds constraints to an artistic practice. I would prefer to just simply be known as a contemporary artist and do and use materials intuitively feel pulled to.
