Applications are NOW openfor RHS Garden Harlow Carr Artist in Residence 2022-2023

We are delighted to announce the launch of the 2022-2023 RHS Harlow Carr Artist in Residence opportunity, which will give a new artist the chance to showcase their work by imagining and developing their own interpretation of the garden to share with our visitors.

People have long been inspired by nature as an impetus for creation and well-being. Nature’s shapes, forms and colours are reflected in the objects around us and the need to capture the form and beauty of nature has been the pursuit of artists, designers and makers for centuries. We are looking to continue this tradition with the next RHS Harlow Carr Artist in Residence.

This will be a wonderful opportunity for an artist to respond to an outstanding horticultural collection. Whether you are inspired by our scientific and biological work, the exploration of the landscape and wildlife in it or individual plant specimen, we are sure that this opportunity will develop artworks that will be truly innovative and engaging for all.

Education and Learning Manager, Kirstie Blything said;

‘We are looking for an artist to present a personal interpretation and perspective of Harlow Carr, creating new work that is innovative, pushes boundaries and inspires well-being. We hope this new work will inspire the public to examine their own vision of the gardens and encourage them to engage in new, creative conversations, continuing the development of Harlow Carr as a site that inspires creative practice.’

Following in the footsteps of award-winning artists Nel Whatmore and Anita Bowerman, the Artist in Residence programme will last a full year, culminating with an exhibition at the RHS Harlow Carr Flower Show 2023. The appointed artist will need to spend at least 3 weeks on-site during their residency, carrying out research and demonstrating their artistic practice at the garden, working closely with the team on site whilst also conversing with and informing the public about the role. They will develop a participatory programme including activities such as workshops, open studios, talks etc.. to help encourage visitors to use the gardens to inspire their own creative visions.
